Brave at heart: The Life and Lens of Walter Victor is a collection of Victor's photography, including forty years of Braves' highlights
Walter Victor’s rags-to-riches life is an inspiration to all who believe determination is the key to success. Born in Dupont, Pennsylvania, he used the survival skills he learned from an abusive childhood and life in the coal fields to become a World War II hero. Serving as a gunsmith with the Ninth Infantry Division, Victor experienced some of the most horrendous and fierce fighting of the war, including the Normandy Invasion and Battle of the Bulge. Awarded four Bronze Stars, eight Combat Stars and a Silver Star for his heroism, he claims the key to his survival, and his life today, has been persistence. After the War, he worked at Fort Gillem Georgia for over thirty years before becoming the Atlanta Braves’ first official photographer, a position he has held for over forty years.
Beloved by the Braves and their fans, Victor is the only photographer to be honored with a permanent camera well on Turner Field, where a brass plaque bears his name.
